09/07/2001:
The first day of lectures fittingly starts with LC80 Introductory Chinese. Very soon, I am becoming aware of the fact that learning Mandarin is a very unique challenge... Compared to learning French and Spanish, it is far easier to get the hang of the grammar. For example, there are neither genders for the nouns, nor tenses. And the Chinese like to use concise sentences. However, the pronounciation is quite difficult for the average european (like me...). Errors in pronounciation can lead to totally different meanings. And although the characters follow certain rules, they basically have to be learnt by heart, together with their pronunciation. We will see how I am going to cope with that... By the way, the heading is a common greeting, comparable to "Hello".
The class is made up of exchange students from all over the world, as well as local students who want to be able to communicate with their fellow students in Mandarin.
In the afternoon, I went to the audition for BAI283 Percussion Techniques. The course is conducted by Jon Fox, principal percussionist with the Singapore Symphonic Orchestra, and promises to be very interesting. Since this was the first week of lectures, the tutorials and lab sessions I usually have did not take place.
