Singapore local variant of what others call a cellphone, mobile, mobile phone or even handy (in Germany) is the handphone. If I were not 100 percent sure that Nokia handphones are manufactured in Finland, I'd say that "Nokia country" must be Singapore. It is not even expected of you to have one -- people will just assume that you do. Local companies have adjusted to this situation and offer SMS lotteries as well as ringtones and logos for download.

When I came here, I thought that the situation is worse than in Germany. But I fear that Germany will catch up while I am away. As I am told, phoning during lectures is not only common in Singapore, it is also happening in Germany...
