Singapore words: Q
Please Queue
Singaporean friends already introduced me to Singapore's two national obsessions: Eating and Shopping. But I think they forgot about the third one: Queueing! Please Q! is frequently seen all over the country -- be it in hawker centres, foodcourts, public offices, banks or when visiting a doctor. Bus interchanges feature an extensive queuing system as well. Sometimes the queuing system is quite elaborated: You need to get a queue number, and a display will show you the currently served numbers.
To be honest, I find the queuing system quite helpful most of the time. It solves Murphy's law applied to multiple queues ("The queue next to you will always move faster"), and will give you an estimate of how long it will take until you are serviced. But it definitely fels weird to have to get a queue number in order to taste Singapore's new favourite drink -- the bubble tea....
