web42 | get210px

get210px is a small utility written in C for Microsoft Windows (TM) 95/98/NT/2000 that can download pictures from a Kodak DC210 digital camera using a serial connection. It is designed to be a no-nonsense downloading program which can be used anywhere, anytime.

Usage

Download the zip-file available below. get210px does not need any installation routine. Just copy get210px.exe and DC210V201_32.dll to a directory of your choice. Once started, get210px will search for the port the camera is connected to and the highest possible transfer rate, then set the clock of your camera to the system's time and start downloading the pictures into the current directory. It will not delete any pictures.

The .zip-archive available contains a compiled executable together with the DLL needed as well as the C-sourcecode. Note that to compile the program, you will most probably need impdef.exe, which is part of the Borland C++ compiler (available free for download at the Borland/Inprise developer website) as well as the GNU C compiler.

Rant

I developed get210px because while studying in Singapore, I was not able to install Kodak's bloated software on the heavily restricted university computers – just because the setup program wanted to install a fancy icon in "My computer". I could not find a simple program to just download the pictures anywhere on the web, so I decided to write a program of my own.

It was quite a challenging task to get the Kodak SDK DLL to work with the GNU C compiler. It would have been very easy for Kodak to create such an utility – once I got the library to work, the program was written in a few hours. Now, this 17 KB program (plus 44 KB for Kodaks library) performs the task faster than Kodak's multiple megabyte software.

I used the software for two to three weeks, then the camera broke down for good.
